Nothing is more formative than the years when one is a child – this is what excites me the most about children’s stories. Children’s stories are pure of heart and all about growth; this is why I chose to write a children’s animation film. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and grow as a writer. I wanted to really explore imbuing my writing with elements of my culture: Southeast Asia. The experience of using Southeast Asian inspirations and themes for my work truly made me question what I stood for in filmmaking: what could be a voice that represents not just me, but other Southeast Asian youths around me? Hati: Sun and Moon is about that – it’s about finding what could truly represent you, and how finding yourself will help you evolve into a person better than the person you were yesterday.
