Abbey House is set to transition from its current role as an educational facility into the YMCA’s first independent community centre for young adults. Designed around three core functions: community, hospitality, and defence. The project is envisioned as a transformative journey toward personal and collective growth, progressing through five interconnected layers from survival to flourishing. The hospitality function serves as both an inviting entry point and a bridge, integrating visitors to play active roles in the centre’s broader support system. Without hallways or passive circulation, the space encourages full engagement, offering fluid, adaptable areas that support interaction, learning, and connection, that fuel the community aspect. The defence function is embedded in the basement, designed to serve as a dual-purpose community survival shelter during emergencies. Prioritising universal design principles, sustainability, and innovative technology, the project aims for long-term social and environmental resilience, redefining Abbey House as a vital civic resource.
